Selecting the preferred paper orientation in DOS print jobs

When printing in GDI mode, normally Printfil automatically rotates in landscape print jobs which are wider than a certain number of columns (characters in the longer row) to ensure the job is always readable, independently by which paper size is defined in the Windows printer driver (for example, a print job designed to be printed on a 136 columns dot-matrix printer can be automatically printed landscape on an A4 or Legal sheet).

Please search for the AutoLand word in the manual, Chapter 3 - That parameter can be visually setup in the Standard Configuration dialog and/or in the optional CFG file.

In this video, we see how to choose the preferred orientation for each print job, with or without user intervention.

With user intervention:

  • Enable Choose (printer) and AutoLand=0
  • Print from DOS to LPT1:
  • Select landscape orientation in the printer properties

Without user intervention:

  • Untick Choose and AutoLand=1
  • Print from DOS again
  • Landscape: Any print is wider than 1 char

  • Setup AutoLand=999
  • Print from DOS again
  • Portrait: The print job is narrower than 999 chars
